Hey Perfect Peace readers! It’s Leah from An Ordinary Fairytale, and I’m honored to be guest posting for Mel while she’s traveling! I’m here to tell you a story about a much loved doll from my youth.

Like many young girls, one of my favorite pastimes growing up was playing with Barbie Dolls. Between my two younger sisters and I, we had quite the collection of dolls and clothes and accessories. I’d spend hours playing with my sisters and friends. As I got older it was no longer cool to play with Barbie’s and so I spent less and less time with my favorite doll, until my interaction was limited to exclaiming over all the cool new things coming out for little girls and their Barbie's when I’d see them in the toy ads at Christmastime. However, this past spring Barbie made a comeback in my life in a surprising way!
The best picture I could find on short notice of my sisters and our Barbie's-
conveniently we're oldest to youngest in this picture: I’m in the back,
then my sisters- Linae in the middle and Paige is leading the way!
I just finished my sophomore year of college at Iowa State University, and I always tell people I bleed cardinal and gold. I have a lot of school pride, as some of my favorite memories have been made at college. I’m the girl who jokes her future children are going to come out in mini-Cyclone cheerleader and football uniforms because that’s the school they’ll like too. (There’s no way they’re wearing Iowa Hawkeye colors- that’s the big in-state rivalry for those of you not familiar with Iowa Universities!) And so you can imagine my surprise when I learned the face of the new Ken doll was going to be the face of a former Iowa State Football Player.

In case you didn't keep up to date on your Barbie trivia- Barbie first came on the scene in 1959, with her boyfriend Ken debuting two years later in 1961. They enjoyed a 43 year romance before breaking up on Valentine's Day in 2004. Fast forward to 2010 when the Barbie Brand partnered with Hudsun Media to produce “Genuine Ken®: The Search for the Great American Boyfriend,” an 8 episode reality online series hosted by Whitney Port to find the face of the new Ken doll. Eight "Ken-testants" competed for the prize, and Iowa State pulled out a win, something it's been struggling to do in sports lately!

Meet Kurtis Taylor: former Iowa State linebacker and future face of the new Ken doll. He likes pina coladas and long walks in the rain...Oh wait just kidding! But his lucky number is 7 and his favorite color red, so he's a winner in my book already! His perfect dream date sounds something like this, " A helicopter ride over Los Angeles. Then, we would land on a rooftop where dinner is prepared and Frank Sinatra is playing in the background. After a great conversation over dinner, we'd fly to the beach and walk under the moon." and he thinks a perfect boyfriend, "truly cares about his girl. He puts her feelings above his at all times and makes sure she is happy at the end of every day.' AWH, right? He grew up with two sisters so he says he was always aware of Barbie and Ken. His take? "Ken is a smooth operator. He is a smooth, suave guy that knows how to treat the ladies." And Kurtis knew how to treat Barbie's fans, because he won the competition and the hearts of ISU girls like me who have fond memories playing with Barbie's while growing up!

Thanks for having me Mel, it was fun to relate a favorite childhood toy to my college life- and the hopeless romantic in me is happy that Barbie and Ken are together again! :)

xoxo, Leah
